An Unexpected Party

In a tent in the woods lived a man. Not a huge, bulky cheap tent, filled with holes and a musty smell, nor yet a fancy, expensive, ultralight tent with titanium poles and no pouches: it was an MSR Hubba NX2, and that means comfort. (Partly taken from the Hobbit: Chapter 1.)

Just kidding, I haven't even started hiking yet. I did however, after an exhausting day, have an unexpected birthday party. While trying to get my hiking gear situated before my flight to California ( did I mention that? Im going on vacation forba week) I had noticed my Aunt pull into the driveway. "What are they here for?" I asked my mother. A quick reply revealed they were coming by to give their condolances for our Yorkie Annabelle who had passed away that morning. I shrugged it off and continued to pack, until more people started to show up. It was that moment I figured it all out. I was having a surprise birthday party. "Great" I thought, after trying hard to not cry all morning, I now had to survive this. Let the festivities begin. Fillet mignon, potatoes, green bean casserole, bread and more littered the table; A feast fit for a king. I was first to make my plate, sitting at the head of the table just slowly swirling my potatoes. I zoned out, realizing the immense journey I was about to take. I felt like Frodo Baggins, ready to carry the One Ring across middle earth to Mordor. Months of treacherous travel and leaving my home and friends behind. And unbeknownst to me, it was about to become a reality (sorta). There was a small pile of cards and gifts on the center of the table, the cards were first to be opened. I grabbed the brown paper bag labeled "Nik" and emptied its contents in front of me. A guide book, maps and a strange small silver cylinder. Some of my grandmothers remaining contents from her time working on the Appalachian trail. This was exciting for me, a piece of history in my hands almost older than I. After fiddling with the silver container I figured it out and got it open, original matches she had with her still perfectly in tact. I decided to light one. A single strike caused it to combust like no match i have ever seen and with that an idea sparked also. My grandmother has always wanted to hike the full trail, but can no longer do so. I'll light a campfire in every state for her, that way a part of her experience years ago will carry on.

After that, I had grabbed the gifts from my sister. These were the most intriguing as they were the only wrapped presents I had received. I read the card first, it was filled from top to bottom with writing. It was a well wishing for my hike, but basicslly in lord of the rings lingo. I was warned of dsnger, to watch out for the Orcs and the places I'll go. It sure feels like I'm about to take the same journey Frodo did. In a small wrapped box was quite literally, the One Ring. A very subtle reminder of the adventure that lies before me. Thousands of miles across the country to climb a mountain. For over four years I've carried the death of my brother Nolan around my neck, literally. At the start of this hike, I decided I needed to let go. I've been silently grieving the loss of my brother for so long that I feel like i can't move forward if I dont. The first step onto the trail will be one of many but it will be a step to the new me. I'm ready to move forward. This hike will be nothing short of am amazing adventure, and I truly cannot wait to begin. Fifteen Days Remain..

“Don’t adventures ever have an end? I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on the story.”

I think lighting a fire for your grandmother will be so special!
