Hikes the Appalachian Trail

The story of "Nature Nik"
My Name is Nik Berthelette — this is my story.
Born and raised in the small town of East Freetown, MA, I spent my childhood growing up on our farm. I was always surrounded by family, animals and most importantly nature. I learned from a young age to respect the fields and forest surrounding me, finding some type of connection and peace within them.
In 2014 my brother Nolan unexpectedly passed away from a brain aneurysm, which caused an intense downward spiral of depression in my life. The only solace I ever found from the grief was when I was out hiking or camping. The mountains lifted me up, rivers and waterfalls cleansed my mind and the fresh air allowed me to breath easy.
Only a year after I was injured in a car accident, temporarily taking away my ability to hike, climb or camp. I struggled for several years after, never being the same "me". A bit of inspiration later and I decided I was going to attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail. I was going to prove to myself and others that I CAN do anything I set my heart to.
I'm so afraid of the unknown that lies ahead, but that's exactly what makes it so exciting.
